Studios have decorative glass elements at their entrances, exceptionally high ceilings and original wood floors. Many have skylights, working gas fireplaces and windows overlooking the hidden courtyard. The Studio Building was built in 1894 with its adjoining annexes added in 1912 and 1913. Notable restaurants include Pops for Champagne, Quartino, Joe's Stone Crab & Steakhouse, Osteria via Stato, P. F. Chang's, La Madia and Mastro's Steakhouse.
History
Commissioned in 1894 by art enthusiasts Lambert and Anna Tree, Tree Studios was designed to cultivate an artistic community in Chicago and was home to the nation's oldest surviving artists' studios. Yet despite its enchanting history, the building faced imminent demolition when its owners announced plans to sell the property to a high-rise developer. Determined to return Tree Studios to its original grandeur, Friedman Properties embraced the challenge of bringing the building up to modern safety standards while restoring its historic integrity and its creative community again took root as inventive retailers and artistic entrepreneurs returned to Tree Studios.
